Dad was home for lunch on Sunday after church. We all enjoyed his company ... along with salmon, salad, and spinach bulgur.

Glow Eindhoven

Glow Eindhoven is a fabulous city-wide light show. This face and the musical light show on the cathedral were two of my favorite sights.

Kaas

I visited my favorite cheese shop on Friday evening.

Sitka

We landed in Sitka on August 16 after a great week in Seattle.

We learned a lot about the native Tlingits, who still have a presence. They lost an historic battle with the Russians here in 1804. This "Totem Park" is both the oldest and smallest National Park in Alaska.

The Russian Bishop's House, now a museum, was built in 1842. The Russians arrived about 1740. Their main objective was to harvest sea otter pelts.

This Bishop was apparently very accepting of the Tlingit culture, and was instrumental in spreading the Russian Orthodox religion in Alaska.

View of downtown Sitka, with the Russian Orthodox Cathedral (the smallest we've seen). It burned in 1966, but was rebuilt. Most of the icons were saved.

It didn't rain while we were in Sitka, but we were often reminded that this is a rainforest.

Mt. Edgecumbe viewed from Totem Park.

On the ferry to Juneau, August 17. A few whales were sighted on the five and a half hour cruise.

Headed for the Lower 48

We had clouds and rain for our last days in Southeast Alaska. Perfect weather for an Alaskan Amber.

Margerie Glacier

We had a great trip up Glacier Bay today. This beautiful glacier is at the top of the bay.

Gastineau Channel

We spent the afternon and evening on the Mt. Roberts ridge above the Gastineau Channel. This is looking
south from high above Juneau.

Mendenhall Glacier

We spent much of Sunday at the Mendenhall Glacier. It has been retreating several hundred feet per year. It will be interesting to compare these photos with those Sarah and Jamie took on their Alaska trip five years ago.

Welcome to Juneau

We saw this mother bear and her three cubs on our cab ride in from the ferry terminal in Juneau.
