Happy Birthday Dee Dee

Rob was out in Oregon last weekend for Dee Dee's 90th birthday. Baby Paloma enjoyed the celebration.

Frescoes

Ancient ruins generally are dull colored, but Roman homes (of the rich) had colorful frescoes in almost every room. The first photo is of a fresco from Livia's villa. The second is a fragment from the wall in the Villa Farnesina.

Roman Hairstyles

The hairstyles in ancient Rome were pretty wild. That's Livia, the wife of Augustus, first. She's followed by her daughter-in-law, Antonia Minora.

Luthier's Workshop

We couldn't resist stopping to look in the window of this luthier's workshop as we walked home one evening.

St. Peter's Square

The sky was beautiful as we left the Vatican. The Pope's apartment is at the far right on the top floor of the building in the last photo.

Vatican Museum

We spent Monday afternoon at the Vatican Museum. The Egyptian statues were amazing. We especially liked Anubis, a jackal in a yoga, and the Sumerian cylinder seals that make an impression in clay.

St. Peter's

We spent Monday at the Vatican. This is the dome and alter in St. Peter's.

Later on Sunday we visited  the Palazzo Altemps, which, like Crypta Balbi, is part of the National Museum of Rome.

On Sunday morning we visited the Crypta Balbi archeological museum on the site of a Roman theatre.

Capitoline Museum

These busts -- mostly of emperors -- made us feel like we were meeting history.

Campo dei Fiori

The market next to our apartment is open every day except Sunday. Pasta, spices, and fresh produce catch our eyes.

Den Haag by Night

Jane arrived in Den Haag this afternoon. After a fine dinner, we walked through the town and passed through the courtyard of the Ridderzaal where the Dutch Parliament has its opening meeting each fall.

On the Beach with Ge and Ger

On my first afternoon in Den Haag, I (Rob) had lunch with good friends Ge and Ger followed by a delightful walk on the beach in Scheveningen.

Paloma

We all had a chance to meet beautiful Paloma in Portland. Grandmother Jennifer and great grandmother Dee Dee were all smiles.
